Colombia fun facts

By Leslie Angelocci, Editor At Large

I have traveled a fare amount in my lifetime, but never did I go to a country or visit an Island where I knew exactly what to expect when I got there. This article will be a bit less personal and a lot more factual than others. I do hope you find this helpful.

After much research, I was able to come up with some of the basics about the South American Country Colombia. Let’s begin our fact- finding mission with Natural Resources: petroleum, nickel, natural gas, gold, emeralds, iron ore, coal, and hydropower. It would appear that Colombia is completely self-sustainable.

Even better, is the fact that the Northern portion of Colombia borders on the Caribbean Sea, between Venezuela and Panama, then on the North Pacific Ocean between Panama and Ecuador.

Comparable in size to just short of two times the size of Texas, the terrain in the East has lowland plains; there are central highland plains, flat coastal lowlands, and the Andes Mountains. Of course the weather is cooler in the highlands, and typically tropical along the coastal and eastern plains.

If you are a sea creature or scuba diving, yachting, or otherwise, it will be good for you to know that this is the “only South American country with coastlines of 1,760 km on the Caribbean Sea and 1,448 km on the North Pacific Ocean.”

In the Capital of Bogota the folks are working on a solution for the air pollution issue with regards to vehicle emissions. Further action is being taken to address deforestation. South America has international agreements for preservations of wetlands and rain forests and the protection of endangered species. Hopefully you read about the rare Condor and more than 1,800 species of birds that are being protected by preservations and the intense efforts of the folks across Colombia.

So grab your bathing suit, your hiking boots, some sun block, binoculars and your camera before you take off for your South American destination and consider yourself informed.

Or perhaps:  Get on a plane and find out for yourself!
