Colombia in numbers: exportation statistics

By Manuel Rueda, Editorial Director

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

Colombia´s exports, which were worth a total of 37.62 billion dollars in 2008, decreased by 12.75% in 2009 to 32.85 billion dollars.

Analysts say this slowdown is due to the global economic crisis and political problems with Venezuela, Colombia´s second largest trading partner. Exports to the neighboring country went down by a whopping 33.5% over 2009.

Colombia´s National department for statistics or DANE reports that the value of exports to the US decreased by 8.9% in 2009.  Some improvement was shown in the last 30 days of 2009, when exports to the US were worth 53.6% more than exports for the last 30 days of 2008.

“Traditional” items, like coffee, coal, and oil, made up 55% of Colombia´s exports  in 2009.  Sales of some goods and services labeled by the government as “non-traditional” exports are growing.  The value of gold exports, for example, grew by 48.7% in 2009, reaching 1.68 billion dollars.

Here are some more stats on Colombian exports:
