Imagine: the winners of Colombian departamental beauty pageants competing to see who is the best chef. Sounds pretty hot, right?
Eight beauty queens squared off last week in Cartagena as part of a competition to see which possible Miss Colombia had the
best skills in the kitchen, which if you ask me is more important than winning the Miss Colombia crown for singing a song or claiming you desire world peace.
The Winners: Luisa Fernanda Gallardo from San Andrés...

...and Nicole Suárez of Tolima.

Luisa cooked a recipe called "crab back" which was basically roasted black crab meat, accompanied with a breadfruit (a type of mulberry) covered in a mango and ají sauce. Sounds spicy!
Nicole cooked freshwater oysters with a mango "pico de gallo" salsa, which sounds like an aphrodisiac.
Other contestants who won the pageants in the departments of Antioquia, Chocó, Sucre, Risaralda, Cesar, and Bolívar also competed, showing off the history of their respective regions in their recipes.
The judges were chefs from local restaurants, and were impressed with the winning ladies' knowledge of local cuisines and heritage.
"Those two surprised us. It was obvious that there was a very careful process of preparation and they really used the ingredients from their own regions. The queen from San Andrés for example, obtained the back of the black crab that is available on her island, not an imitation. In that way, she made a very emblematic dish from her region. In order to braise it, she didn't use white wine, like they do all the time now, but instead used red wine," said one impressed and loquacious chef judge.
The next cooking challenge takes place September 23rd in Cali, and features the beauty pageant winners from the departments of Valle, Nariño, Cauca, Magdalena, Huila, Norte de Santander, Atlántico, and Caldas.
