Lots of love for Colombia in Latin Grammy nominations

By Daniel Brody, Editorial Director

Wednesday, September 8, 2010

The nominations for the 11th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards were announced today in Hollywood, California, and Colombians were a common sight among the nominees.

Let's start with the category most dominated by Colombians: the nominees for Best Cumbia or Vallenato album. All five nominees are Colombian: the living legend Diomedes Díaz, El Binomio de Oro, Omar Geles, Poncho Zuleta (who beat a trial alleging that he had paramilitary ties earlier this year), and "Me Gusta, Me Gusta" composer Jorge Oñate. Well, that guarantees that at least one Colombian goes home happy.

In the Best Alternative Song category, Pacific coast rappers ChocQuibTown received a nomination for their song "De Donde Vengo Yo" (Where I'm Coming From). There's a reason these hip-hoppers are placed in the alternative category rather than among the urban nominees: it's because they are truly different than all the reggaeton noise clogging clubs and radio stations all over Latin America. The group combines the tamboras and marimbas of their native Afro-Colombian music with rhymes of cultural pride and romantic love as opposed to a steady string of one-night stands prevalent in much of Latin hip-hop. Check out the track, it's like no other hip-hop you've ever heard.

Colombian salsa is still getting respect, as the country's own Guayacán Orquesta had their album Bueno y Mas nominated for best salsa album.

Santiago Cruz received a nomination for Best Singer-Songwriter Album with his latest disc "Cruce de Caminos".

Colombian Christian rock gets a nod as Alex Campos' "Te puedo sentir" was nominated for best Christian Album.

Two Colombian artists are nominated in the Best Folk Album category. Tropical singer Checo Acosta received a nod for his album exploring Colombian folkloric music, "El Folclor de mi Tierra", while bullerengue singer Petrona Martínez received a nomination for her latest disc, "Las Penas Alegres".

In te category of Best Tropical Song, Colombian pop star Fonseca was nominated for his collaboration with American salsa legend Willie Colón, "Estar Lejos".

Finally, Julio Reyes Copello, audio engineer of stars such Marc Anthony and Chayanne was nominated for Producer of the Year.

With all these competitive nominees, it should be a banner night for Colombia, The awards ceremony will be held on November 11th at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

The complete list of nominees can be viewed at the official GRAMMY website.
