Blanca Ines Duran, mayor of Bogota's gay-friendly Chapinero district, has announced that she will marry her girlfriend, anthropologist Catalina Villa.
The ceremony will take place at a restaurant in northern Bogota on October 31st.
Colombian law only allows couples of the same sex to have a civil union performed by a notary, although Colombian courts are currently investigating the possibility of allowing gay marriage in the country.
In an interview with Colombian newspaper El Tiempo, Duran said that the ceremony will have a "Celtic touch". The couple will be tied up together with a rope inside a circle of flowers as a symbolic representation of their commitment.
Duran also said that her mother, who is Christian, needed almost seven years to become accustomed to her daughter's homosexuality, but that she is now very supportive of her.
As to the why of getting married, Duran's answer was twofold. The couple wanted to publicly express their love for each other as well as their desire to share their lives together, but also wanted to show people that they want the same right to marriage as a straight couple has.
