Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera met with his Chinese counterpart Liang Guanglie in

Bogotá on Monday to arrange military cooperation between the two countries.

The Chinese government will loan Colombia about US$1 million for military equipment purchases, and both countries will share military training knowledge.

Liang's visit to Colombia is part of a "goodwill" tour of Latin America by the Chinese minister, which started in Mexico on Wednesday and will conclude in Brazil later this week.

Rivera and Liang gave a press conference following the meeting, where both reiterated their committment to cooperating on varied projects, especially in fighting international crimes such as human trafficking and illegal arms sales, as well as terrorism and drug trafficking within Colombia.

The Chinese government also invited ten high military officials from Colombia to come to China for specialized training conferences on a variety of topics.

Meanwhile, Colombian military specialists will also be traveling to China to train soldiers in the techniques of sniper shooting, underwater combat, river combat, and survival techniques out in the wild.

Liang, who is the first Chinese defense minister to visit Colombia, highlighted that the two countries "have a lot of consensus in the cooperation of military development."

"We agreed that we are going to continue our contacts at a high level," Guanglie said.
