Colombia has 8 million internet users

By Daniel Brody, Editorial Director

Wednesday, September 8, 2010

The Colombian Ministry of Information and Communications Technology said that the country has 8 million internet users on 3.3 connections as of March 2010.

The ministry's "Quarterly Connectivity Report," released this week, said that suscriptions to internet services went up four percent since the end of last year, increasing by about 130,000.

The use of the internet through mobile devices has also increased 5.4 percent since last year, with almost a million users in Colombia.

Most of the internet access that Colombians have is broadband, with 92 percent of internet users utilizing that type of connection. 61 percent of Colombian internet connections have speeds of 1.024 kilobytes per second or more.

Four internet service providers control 82 percent of the Colombian market. EPM Telecomunicaciones is the biggest, with 516,991 connections, but runners-up Telmex, Colombia Telecomunicaciones, and ETB are all less than 70,000 connections behind.

The ministry's report also revealed that during the first three months of 2010, Colombians sent over 2 billions SMS and MMS messages to each other.

Finally, the report highlighted the work of Compartel, Colombia's government program that seeks to eventually implement universal access to telecommunications services. The program connected 26,000 public institutions during the first quarter of 2010, with schools, local government offices, hospitals, and public libraries making up the majority of the recipients.
