National newspaper EL TIEMPO today revealed information from a United Nations report which says that cocaine production in Colombia for 2009 fell to 390 tones, making it the lowest amount since 1994.
The UN report which will be officially revealed later this week tracks developments in the fight against drugs such as cocaine exports and the total surface of illegal crops.
Colombia´s ministry of the interior reports that in 2009 there were 68,025 hectares of illegal crops in Colombia, a 16% fall from 2008.
And according to the UN´s figures, cocaine production in the country has fallen by 39% from 2005 to 2009 going from 640 to 390 tones.
This fall in production appears to have had an impact on the price of cocaine in the streets of the US.
Last year the DEA reported that the average price of a gram of cocaine in the US has been increasing since 2007, going from $99.48 USD per pram to $176 USD per gram in 2009.
