Environmentally aware fashionistas are staging the second clothing exchange at Bogota´s Minimal Restaurant on Saturday March 27th.
The exchange session or trueque is organized by Ecochic, a group of young professionals who are trying to prove that the fashion industry can also be ecological.
Participants at Ecochic´s clothing exchanges bring second hand clothes in good condition to the fashion boutique at Minimal Restaurant and trade them for other second hand apparel.
Anyone can take their old clothes and participate. You need to pay an entry fee of 20,000 Pesos (about US$10.00) for which you are given a free environmental bag -- or scarf -- and access to eco chick clothing exchanges for the following six months.
The idea behind these exchanges is for people not to simply throw away the clothes they no longer like, but to extend their use by giving them to someone else.
Organizers in Bogota are urging people to “join the tendency that is circulating all over Amsterdam, London, and Berlin,” saying that “we all have clothes others can use and adore.”
The recently established Ecochic organization also gathers old pieces of textiles and rags of clothing left over by factories and works with at risk youth in Bogota´s poor neighborhoods to make accessories like handbags, scarves, and earrings with these old materials.
The accessories are then sold for a small profit at several boutiques in Bogota.
Ecochic has over 200 fans on Facebook and organizes lectures, workshops, and fashion shows in schools and universities, teaching youth about “sustainable consumption” and showing them that fashion can be done in an environmentally friendly way. All of this is with the use of recycled materials and creative techniques.
Ecochic´s second clothing exchange takes place on Saturday March 27 at 4pm at Bogota´s Minimal Restaurant, which is located at Carrera 4A # 57-52.
