Foreign country allegedly financing presidential campaign

Felipe Muñoz, the director of Colombia´s DAS intelligence agency, said Wednesday that his organization has documents that show “a foreign government” is attempting to “intervene” in the upcoming Colombian elections by financing a presidential campaign and two congressional campaigns.
Muñoz says he holds documents which ratify statements made by President Uribe earlier this week, in which the head of state warned Colombians that “a foreign government wants to impose presidential candidates on Colombia.”
Muñoz refused to reveal which country is funding campaigns or which candidates are receiving foreign money, because the information he holds is still under analysis.
He says inquiries into foreign campaign funding began after the ministry of foreign affairs placed a complaint, and he has set up a special committee to further investigate these accusations.
According to President Uribe, the documents held by the DAS show that a foreign government is working on a mid-term strategy for “political change” in Colombia with a local presidential candidate.
The documents, Uribe said on Monday, include plans to “ease” relations with a foreign country and to take a new course of “policies to change Colombia.”
“If Colombia elects these weaklings who disguise themselves as good guys,” the President said, “that weakness will allow terrorists to become strong once again.”
Such talk makes analysts think that Uribe is referring to Venezuela, which has been accused of interfering in elections in neighboring countries, and has also been accused of supporting Colombia´s FARC guerrillas.
For now, the government is keeping its mouth shut about the possible “foreign” campaign financier. It has also not said what actions it will take if and when the current investigation concludes.
