Colombian pop singer Juanes said in an interview with Mexican newspaper El Universal that decriminalizing the use of marijuana is the best way to begin eliminating the violence from drug traffickers that is afflicting both Colombia and Mexico.
However, Juanes drew the line at full legalization. "Legalize is a very strong word, it has many negative connotations, but to decriminalize marijuana, for example, it's the most viable path to begin with," said the singer.
The interview, published on Wednesday, featured the singer praising the current president of Mexico, Felipe Calderon, for his recent comments calling for a debate on the possible decriminalization of drugs.
"How great that a possible debate is starting to make noise, really there's no other option, the only option is to decriminalize it," Juanes continued.
The Grammy winner also lamented the state of the fight against drugs in Colombia, saying the the country has lost a lot of money pursuing "failed" anti-drug policies.
Juanes is currently on tour in support of his newest single, "Yerbatero". The song is about the seller of a different type of drug, the traditional herb salesman of the Antioquia region who has a natural plant for any medical problem.
