Local authorities are telling Bogota mountain lovers to be cautious about which areas of the Eastern Hills, or Cerros Orientales, they exercise in, after thieves killed a young trekker in the area above Parque Nacional.
Carlos Guerrero, 25, and his friend Carlos Herrera, 21, were trekking Cerro del Norte and Pico de Gallo hills above Parque Nacional, as they trained for a longer expedition in the El Cocuy mountain range in Boyaca.
Herrera says that as they saw a couple of thieves approaching them with weapons, both men decided to split apart and run down different paths.
Herrera was able to hide from the assailants and eventually made it down to the Avenida Circunvalar where he called police for help.
But no sight of Guerrero emerged on Monday and on Tuesday morning, police rescue teams found Guerrero´s body in the mountains with a bullet hole in his head. Police think the thieves killed the trekker in order to steal his mountain gear.
Bogota´s Eastern Hills have dozens of trails which are visited by a hundreds of trekkers every day.
Most trails are free of thieves and the ones that begin in the north of the city at Avenida Circunvalar with Calle 72 and Avenida Circunvalar with Calle 78, are known for being the safest.
Park rangers are telling visitors to avoid the trails that start at Parque Nacional.
