Fans of Cuban musicians the Buena Vista Social Club will be excited to hear that one of their most popular members, female singer Omara Portuondo, will be giving a concert in Bogotá on October 1st at the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santodomingo, one of the city's newest and most extravagant venues.
"Feeling's Girlfriend" and "The Voice of Cuba" are just two of the nicknames given to the singer, who has been performing for over fifty years.
Portuondo has played stages all over the world and sung with Nat King Cole and a who's who of Cuban musicians, including Los Van Van, Chucho Valdés, Juan Formell, and of course the Buena Vista Social Club.
Portuondo was born in Havana in 1930, the child of a wealthy Spanish woman who scandalized her family by marrying a black Cuban baseball player. She began singing twenty years later in a variety of native Cuban musical styles, including son and bolero.
Her career was unexpectedly revived in 1996, when the Buena Vista Social Club album became a hit sensation and won a Grammy.
The album was meant to reunite pre-revoultionary Cuban musicians from Havana, and struck a chord with many music fans interested in the roots of salsa music. Portuondo was the only female in the group of assembled musicians, and shines on the song "Veinte Años".
The success with Buena Vista Social Club has helped Portuondo to release a number of successful solo albums in its wake, including "Gracias", which won a Latin Grammy for best contemporary tropical album last year.
Tickets start at 100,000 pesos for the third balcony, all the way to 250,000 pesos for sitting down in front, and can be purchased through Tuboleta.
