The City Government of Pereira has officially declared this Friday night “ladies only night” in the city, organizing a series of free cultural, leisure, and sports activities that only women will be able to attend.
Men will be encouraged to stay at home taking care of children and performing household tasks and those who do venture into the city’s streets will have to seek special permission from local police.
The idea behind the ladies only night goes beyond encouraging men to take care of household tasks. Organizer Patricia Salazar said the event “attempts to break current stereotypes against Pereirian women,” who in Colombia and around the world “have been portrayed as escort ladies, prostitutes, or simply women who will sleep with anyone.”
Salazar says Pereiran women are “intelligent, good housewives, and good citizens who are helping to improve their city.”
The ladies only night will include a free classical music concert, outdoor aerobics sessions, an art exhibit that features works by local women, and a cocktail organized by the mayor’s wife.
Womens' only nights were first organized by Bogota Mayor Antanas Mockus in the 1990s, and since then, the idea has been implemented in a several Colombian cities.
Women from Pereira, or Pereiranas, were first accused of being “easy” by people from the nearby town of Manizales which is higher in the mountains and has a more conservative society.
Drug trafficking in Pereira however has furthered this reputation, because with their money and their lust for women, drug traffickers have created a market for escorts and prostitutes with operated bodies, big curves, high heels, and tiny clothes.
