Anti-jealousy hotline opens in Barrancabermeja

The mayor's office in the Colombian city of Barrancabermeja plans to open a telephone line on Thursday to assess which people suffer from excessive jealousy to help avoid cases of mistreatment and domestic abuse.
The line, called "Jealousy Anonymous", is a program designed to offer advice and "symbolic vaccines" for people on the giving and receiving end of jealous rages.
A campaign publicizing the hotline started on Tuesday, with a live television and radio broadcast of a discussion forum called "Without Jealousy, There Is Love." Among the themes talked about at the forum included "I see her laughing and talking on her cell phone and I think that she's talking to another guy", "But you yourself aren't even sure", "Pedro, I want to tell you something that is driving me to desperation", and "Yes, it's true, but I can't control it."
Colombia's forensic medicine office, Medicina Legal, said that the small Colombian city of 300,000 residents registered 506 cases of domestic abuse.
"With the Jealousy Anonymous hotline, we are looking not only to lower our rates of domestic abuse, but also to eradicate that kind of behavior in our fellow residents," said mayor Carlos Alberto Contreras López.
The program will also offer personalized therapy sessions and pedagogical activities about anger management and improved communication, all free of charge.
