A near-exact replica of the World Cup championship trophy was supposed to be sent from Colombia to Spain along with fifteen different team jerseys.
However, a surface imperfection on the trophy's surface motivated an El Dorado airport policeman in Bogota to send the trophy to a crime lab to make sure everything was as it seemed.
The scan revealed that the trophy contained eleven kilograms, or twenty-four pounds, of cocaine worth about 100 million Colombian pesos (US$50,000) meant for export to Europe.
Aside from the surface imperfection, the copy was almost exactly the same as the original, measuring 36 centimeters high and having the same golden color as the real thing.
The sender of the package has not been found, and gave fake information when mailing the package so as not to be easily traced.
Authorities are currently investigating the intended destination of the package, along with the post office from which the package was sent, to track down those responsible.
