According to the most recent Airbus global marketing projections, Colombian airlines will need to purchase 122 planes each with a capacity of more than 100 passengers over the next 20 years, in order to satisfy growing demand for air transport.
The Airbus report claims that in 2008 Colombia had a fleet of 60 midsized airplanes to serve its domestic routes and estimates that by 2028 a fleet of 152 planes will be in service.
Air traffic is growing rapidly in Colombia thanks to stiff competition amongst local airlines, the opening of new airports and declining of fees.
The number of domestic flight passengers transported by budget airline Aires for example grew by 130% in the last quarter of 2009, while in the same period the number of domestic passengers carried by Avianca and Aero Republica grew by 15% and 30% respectively.
Around the world passenger numbers grew by 4.7% in 2009 and according to Airbus figures Latin America is one of the regions were air traffic will continue to increase.
The airplane manufacturers expect annual income per kilometre flown to increase by an average of 5.9% for airlines operating midsized airplanes in the region from 2009 to 2014.
