U.S. President Barack Obama will meet his Colombian counterpart Juan Manuel Santos for the first time on September 24th in New York, at a United Nations General Assembly meeting.
The two leaders plan to have a conversation about the future relationship between the two countries.
Santos told reporters on Monday that he wanted to talk with Obama about the "many subjects" they had in common, as well as conversing about improving cooperation and increasing the friendship between the two countries.
It was the U.S. government that first revealed that the upcoming meeting would take place.
Obama's deputy national security adviser for strategic communications, Ben Rhodes, announced the meeting earlier today from the White House.
Rhodes told journalists that Obama "had a lot of desire to meet with his Colombian colleague to analyze going forward with their relationship."
The presidential advisor also said that Santos would be the only Latin American leader that Obama would meet with at the assembly, which "highlights the importance of the alliance" that both countries have with each other.
While in New York, Santos will also be meeting with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, ex-U.S. president Bill Clinton, ex- prime minister of the United Kingdom Tony Blair, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, the presidents of Turkey and Vietnam, and the prime ministers of the Netherlands and Canada.
