By Manuel Rueda, Editorial Director

Thursday, April 15, 2010

Three months after the earthquake in Haiti, Colombian pop star Shakira visited a refugee camp in Port au Prince where she announced plans to build a school for children affected by the natural disaster.

“We´re getting to work,” said the 33 year old pop star from Barranquilla who already finances educational projects for poor children in Colombia through her Pies Descalzos – bare feet –foundation.

Shakira visited the Pietonville Golf Club, a once luxurious site that has become a refugee camp for some 50,000 people.

The singer was met there by actor Sean Penn who is now running a relief organization in Haiti.

Shakira told reporters that her Pies Descalzos foundation is already looking for land in which to build the school and evaluating the most urgent necessities faced by local children.

Some 217,000 people died in the catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake that shook Port au Prince and other Haitian cities on January 12, 2010.

Two hundred and fifty thousand houses were destroyed and the country´s economy was left in ruins.
